Destination Survey
Today the RBK Sub Regional Unit publishes the Annual Destination Survey.
This data provides valuable information at both national and local level on the early transition of young people from compulsory education. It can inform young people, their teachers, parents and advisers as well as the research community of the early post-16 pathways taken by recent cohorts of young people.
Across the South London Sub Region, (Croydon, Bromley, Merton, Richmond, Kingston and Sutton) the Sub Regional Unit has the responsibility to collect this data by making sure that every year 11 leaver is contacted in September, October and November to ascertain their current destination. Results are compiled during December and January and then reported to the Department for Education (DfE)
Ayub Khan, Director of the RBK-SRU said “These reports provide accurate information on the progression of young people as they leave school and provide the basis for the new Destination Measures that DfE will introduce later this year. “
Vicky Charles Head of IMS at the RBK-SRU said “The publication of these reports is the result of a robust process of contacting young people across South London and working co-operatively with schools and colleges to share information as to young people’s current activities.
This information becomes ever more important with the introduction of Raising the Participation Age as Local Authorities will be required to both promote effective participation in education and training for all their 16 and 17 year olds and to make arrangements to identify young people resident in their area who are not participating.”

Smarter use of Information technology
A new Integrated Youth Support Caseload Management System was launched across South London on Monday 23rd August 2010.
This new system builds on previous caseload management arrangements and offers Personal Advisers, Careers Advisers and other practitioners delivering Information advice and guidance more flexibility and enhanced tools to support their work. The new system also meets the highest level of industry standards with 128 bit encryption for security.
The system has greater flexibility to help boroughs with their integrated youth support working arrangements taking in data and information from a number of services for young people. As all work becomes integrated and streamlined the system will allow information to be shared easily and securely.
A Level Results
Next week the wait will be over and young people across the country will receive their A Level results. Many will have clear plans and offers in place.
In South London, Advisers from the Connexions Service will be on hand to provide expert advice and guidance. Ayub Khan Director of the RBK-SRU said “Across South London young people will get their results and we of course wish them well. We know how hard they have worked. Some young people may require further advice and I would urge them to make use of the experienced Advisers and the resources available at the Connexions Centres across South London. Staff will be on hand to help. In today's harsh economic climate, being well informed about future options is crucial”.

Leonardo Project
The Connexions South London Sub Regional Unit received funding from Leonardo to run a mobility project sending Personal Advisers from South London to Denmark and Sweden to learn how they tackle various issues surrounding youth unemployment. The project was a mutual learning experience as we both sent and hosted Youth Workers and Personal Advisers, allowing areas of particular specialist expertise to be covered and experience and knowledge to be shared.
Supporting Parents & Carers
Parents and Carers play a really important role in supporting teenagers. A recent survey by the National Children’s Bureau found that 63% of respondents stated that parents played a key role influencing them on their future career choices.
As part of a pan London approach, Connexions Services have designed a leaflet to help support parents and carers to help support their teenagers.

Young People's Survey
In January 2010, the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames Sub Regional Unit (RBK-SRU) contacted young people to get their views of the Connexions Service operating across South London.
The survey is now complete and initial findings are:
- 80% of respondents have used Connexions to access advice on jobs/careers information.
- The majority of respondents were aged 16 – 18 but there were a significant number that were 19 or above who responded.
- 85% of respondents are in education, employment or training. However there were a significant number of respondents who were not engaged in any form of training, education or employment.
- 74% prefer to receive advice and guidance face to face and electronic methods such as websites and computer packages were also quite popular.
- 88% of respondents are clear on where to go in order to access Connexions Services.
- Whilst the majority of respondents felt that the opening hours of Connexions Centres met their needs, there was a need for some Centres to open longer during the evening.
Ayub Khan, Director of the RBK-SRU said “In any service you need to establish what works well and what aspects need improving. This survey gives us more up to date information about how young people view the service. We will work with our providers to ensure that improvements are put in place and we will continue to ask young people what they think. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the young people who responded and congratulations to Amy Harris and Debra Chilumbi who were both the lucky winners of the iPod Touch.”
Pictured below are Amy and Debra collecting their prizes.
